Involves application in a coherent manner of a range of essential engineering knowledge and practices relevant to mechanical engineering design to produce engineering solutions to a prescribed situation. This includes the detailed design of individual components that make up multi-component, functional mechanical systems as well as fatigue, stress, deflection and critical speeds analysis. The determination of essential characteristics relating to component interrelationships as well as consideration of manufacture, assembly, safety and optimisation are also applied.
