Symbolism is significant in contemporary life. This course considers how signs and symbolic forms are used, both overtly and covertly, to convey gastronomic messages congruent with their subjective and socio-cultural interpretations. Students develop skills at semiotic analysis, learning how semiotic interpretation mediates and reinforces constructs of class, ethnicity, gender and age. Branding, marketing campaigns, dining experiences and wider gastronomy are studies for semiotic analysis.
