The course prepares students for their first translation and interpreting assignments. Students develop an awareness of the problems involved in translation and interpreting. To this end they will familiarise themselves with the various techniques of preparing and analysing a written source text and perform the steps in the translation process to produce several drafts of target texts. They will self-assess and peer- assess target texts and produce a reflective commentary on the steps in the translation process and the assessment of the target text. Additionally, students will gain also develop an understanding of the professional ethics for translators and interpreters. They will identify ethical problems for translators and interpreters when translating, learning to identify and address ethical issues by following relevant guidelines.
