Identifies and locates indigenous journalism practice in the historic and cultural contexts of their communities. Investigates approaches to indigenous journalism in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, and explores their impacts, directions and progress. Examples from around the world will be explored. Students take a strongly heutagogical approach to exploring Māori and other indigenous journalisms, setting their own learning objectives during in-depth wānanga. Along the way, the suitability and adaptations of the Anglo-American model of journalism to an indigenous world are examined and indigenous journalism today, both within and mainstream and beyond, is considered against its colonised past.
