This course provides students with the academic component in support of their participation in the Spanish Government's Language and Culture Assistants Program. Students accepted into this programme are given a stipend to cover their cost of living while they spend a semester in Spain (from January to June) participating in English language classes. This is a one-year course, from July to June that will start with some classes on campus during Semester 2 to prepare students for their placement as Language and Culture Assistants in Spain in Semester 1, the following year. During this course, students will develop basic communication skills in Spanish language and culture and acquire transferable intercultural competencies as they interact and work with others effectively across linguistic and cultural variations. The Spanish language and Intercultural Competence components of the course will support students to grow their cultural and intercultural awareness, and criticality by researching, analysing, and evaluating beliefs, values, practices, and identity in their own and the Spanish speaking cultures. The course will also help students to learn basic general knowledge about Spain.
