This course looks at how modern video games and conspiracy theories converge, creating alternative realities in the social sphere. We investigate the effects of the engaging (some say addictive) worlds and communities created by video games, and look at how some of these worlds and communities can become conducive to the mainstreaming of conspiracy theories. Topics for discussion include: the overlapping histories of video games and conspiracy theories; the many elements they have in common and the crucial differences between them; and what happens when the distinction between video games and conspiracy theories breaks down. Students will explore the practice and theory of game studies, critically analyse the relationship between games and historical and current events, and consider their positionality as digital researchers.
