This course explores the Deaf World and what it means to be deaf today, through the study of international and national Deaf communities: their signed languages, cultural values, membership affiliation and boundaries. It investigates the interactions between Deaf and non-deaf individuals and organisations, within Deaf spaces and in wider society. Students are expected to observe political activism and intercultural communication through encounters with Deaf people during the semester.
