Students study fiction produced in geographical locations once colonised by the British Empire. A contentious term, “New Literatures” is often used interchangeably with “post-colonial literature,” since both convey how western literary conventions and languages were manipulated in fresh ways in the colonial contact zone during and after the rise of anticolonial nationalist movements. Subsequent generations of novelists in these locations continue to manipulate formal and thematic literary conventions while expressing diverging colonial, anti-colonial, and post-colonial identities.
