An introduction to the contemporary Deaf World: a basic awareness of Deaf people and their language and culture. Students will learn the impacts of the history of Deaf education on Deaf people’s lives and discover various perspectives of Deaf people as disabled individuals and as a culturally affirmative minority in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Students are expected to gain an understanding of Deaf experiences through real-life interactions with Deaf people throughout the semester.
