The course explores the genre of the novel through the close reading of key works by the acclaimed British writer, Jane Austen. The course introduces students to the literary, historical, and social issues that concerned Austen in her writings, and to the critical reception of her novels across the centuries. Students learn how adaptations both interpret and interrogate the original texts and provide insight into why Austen's fiction remains relevant and compelling in the twenty-first century.
