The course addresses the changing concepts of development, from its early focus on economic growth to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and alternative frameworks. Students are introduced to examples of community, regional, international, sustainable and indigenous development in the Asia-Pacific region. A cross-cutting gender analysis, from the exclusion of unpaid work from economic frameworks, to the inclusion of third gender people in law and policy frameworks, is examined and applied. Students will examine how civil society advocacy and global agreements on climate change, environmental protection, human rights and wellbeing, and the COVID pandemic, are changing the discourse and outcomes of development and gender analysis.
