This course will examine the history of te reo Māori and contemporary efforts to revitalise the language. This includes the linguistic development of the Māori language from Eastern Polynesia to Aotearoa; the impact of colonisation and broader socio-political impacts; the political actions and legal challenges by Māori activists and language revitalisation interventions. These issues will be examined in a range of contexts including education, broadcasting and social media.
