This course advances the study of popular histories and contemporary media as connected to the framework of Gothic horror. It builds upon theoretical debates and social issues surrounding the historical evolution of popular monsters in the Western context − from folkloristic and mythological creatures to zombies, vampires, witches, and beyond − and their place in contemporary culture. It explores the textual and social implications of monster narratives in relation to the broader popular culture scope, and how these are connected to the creation of our social and cultural identities. Through critiquing popular monsters in multiple historical contexts, and exploring their re-emergence in contemporary media trends, it addresses notions connected to consumerism, the body, gender and sexuality, ethnicity, geo-politics, technology, digital cultures, popular trends, and (post)colonial identities. Ultimately, via the study of monsters, this course uncovers important social debates about the world we live in, the stories we tell, and how we see ourselves and others at any given moment in time.
