Investigates the rise of English as the dominant language of world economy and global culture. Controversies over the effect of this on English and other languages, including issues of linguistic imperialism, post-colonialism, multilingualism and language planning, are raised. Practical reference is made to how understanding the history, evolution and spread of English can help students to master micro-level language features. The role of regional varieties of English and dialects is examined.
