This course introduces methods and algorithms used to analyse big datasets using a programming language for data analytics. Students will develop a basic working knowledge of programming for analytics and learn a range of methods for analysing publicly available social data. The course will also discuss challenges and ethical issues involved in big data collection and storage, interpreting results obtained from data analysis, and fairness in algorithmic decision making. The formal data analysis skills and approaches in this course are intended to complement any major.
