This course provides students with a critical awareness of key theories and concepts underlying the study of popular culture and performance. These theories and concepts help us as producers and consumers to engage thoughtfully, critically and creatively with the experiences and materials of everyday life: with films, television and other media, with literature and comic books, and with theatrical, ritual and social acts. We will be looking throughout the semester to see how diverse theories can help us to discover how our encounters with the popular allow us to (re)imagine who we are and how we come to be here now as individuals and as members of society.
