This course explores in theory and in practice the many ways the act of coming together in song can unite and uplift people in diverse, often oppressive, social contexts. We will take Lift Every Voice and Sing the African American National Anthem composed in 1900 by brothers James Weldon and John Rosamond Johnson and still popular today, for example as sung by Beyonc at Coachella in 2018 both as an inspiration and as a point of departure for considering the power of song in Aotearoa. Looking at key examples of songs and waiata that perform a desire for social justice at the intersection between hope and resistance on stages and in the streets, in New Zealand and elsewhere we will analyse and sing songs of freedom, of protest and of revolution, anthems and rallying cries. Students will have the opportunity to compose and perform songs that reflect their personal circumstances and understandings and pursue their own ideas of social justice, and to participate in a collective performance.
