This course critically investigates alternative notions of education beyond formal schooling systems. The complexities of 21st century life coupled with rapid expansion of knowledge and technology require a re-think of the core aims and approaches in education. This course examines historical and current alternative education, such as progressive and critical education, non-formal education, alternatives for disenfranchised youth, and community and life-long learning. Social pedagogy will be explored in greater detail, as an inclusive philosophical and pragmatic approach to help reimagine education in its broadest sense.
