This course critically examines restorative justice approaches and philosophies. Indigenous understandings of justice in Aotearoa/New Zealand have influenced the international development of restorative justice. In turn, restorative justice has had a considerable impact on the criminological world because of its emphasis on healing societal harm, and is often seen as an alternative to the punishment of wrongdoers advocated by the criminal justice system. Rather than imprisonment, restorative approaches encourage community engagement, acceptance and responsibility for harm done.
