Some of the 'big ideas' underpinning contemporary educational debates will be explored in this course. Such ideas include: what is education, and how and why did today's educational institutions develop? Relationships are discussed between education and society; between education and the economy; education and psychology; education and Te Tiriti o Waitangi; education and politics; and education and the environment. Discussions of selected recent high-profile educational issues will be the context for exploring such questions.
