This course gives students an advanced introduction to the theory and practice of human rights communication and advocacy, exploring the intersecting roles of governments, civil society organisations and national human rights institutions and equivalent agencies such as the Ombudsmen's Office. Students will examine fundamental human rights such as freedom of expression, the right to privacy and new internet based rights and explore the critical nexus between communication, human rights and audiences, combining theory, practice and interventions including new and old media platforms. The role of anti-discrimination legislation will be examined, as will the responsibilities and duties of advocates.
