The police are the "gatekeepers" to the criminal justice system and are therefore an integral part of how society is governed. Students explore the complex relationship between how New Zealand is policed as well as the public and political expectations placed on the police. Using national and international evidence, students will be given a critical overview of the relevant perspectives that have influenced policing in the past, and the present, while considering the future of policing in NZ.
