This paper explores differing ways of understanding the nature of 'education'. In education everything is up for debate: assumptions, aims, methods, achievements. Education can be seen as a means of taming the unruly, of reproducing existing power relations, of emancipating the oppressed, of creating wealth for a future, of harnessing human potential for learning. All these assumptions or beliefs influence the nature of educational politics, schooling, teaching, and learning.
