Provides an introduction to the concept of trauma and its relevance in the legal system. Students will gain an understanding of the ways in which trauma and mental distress can affect lawyer-client relationships. The focus of the course will be on trauma-informed lawyering practices and how to apply a trauma-informed approach to minimise the risk of re-traumatising clients, establishing boundaries, and building healthy working relationships. The course will also cover the role of trauma within the legal system and examine how various movements have responded to injustices within the justice system. Finally, students will learn how to create an effective plan to reduce burnout and secondary traumatic stress.
