Higher education is being challenged at the local, national and global level by a range of external forces. These include: ongoing funding issues; massification/diversity/inclusion/internationalisation issues; the reshaping of the traditional disciplines, academic work, and the former professions; the rise of managerialism, entrepreneurialism, globalisation and neo-liberalism; digitisation and exponentiality; and the Anthropocene. Are universities ‘in crisis’? Do universities as we know them have a future? What could a ‘good’ university look like in the future? How could we contribute to this? In this course we will explore these questions and look at what it means to be an academic, now and in a range of different possible futures.
