The presence and nature of various material flaws that cause crack growth are examined and the fundamental principles of the fracture mechanics and failure analysis are learnt to understand the mechanisms of crack growth and failures of mechanical structures. Thus knowledge is gained and used to prevent failures in mechanical designs and skills are acquired to analyse the causes of structure failures.
