An exploration of Tāmaki Makaurau’s history until 1900. This will commence with an analysis of the waka histories and their connections to the naming of parts of Tāmaki, followed by a survey of the early histories Ngāti Pāoa and Te Waiohua in Tāmaki. A particular area of focus will be on the political and diplomatic events leading up to Ngāti Whātua’s invasion of Tāmaki in the eighteenth century, and a study of the scale and significance of Ngāpuhi’s attack on Mauinaina pā in the early nineteenth century. One of the themes in the paper will be how Ngāti Whātua came to dominate parts of Tāmaki, and from there, the process by which Tāmaki became the country’s capital and the subsequent European colonisation of the area.
