Teachers who demonstrate an ethic of care understand the nature of their learners and are informed about the influences of Aotearoa New Zealand’s socio-cultural and historical-political contexts. This provides a foundation for the concept of Ako: reciprocal learning and teaching, which is built on the understanding and valuing of partnership with young learners, their whānau and communities. Student teachers’ beliefs and assumptions about learning and teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand will be explored and challenged in order to develop adaptive expertise in the early learning service/school classroom. Literacy in Primary and Early Childhood is the focus of the course.
