This course provides a historical overview of Māori in New Zealand fiction feature film from the early silent period to the present. While surveying the cinematic history, topics explored will include sovereignty, political responses to film, the New Zealand Film Commission and it’s roles and functions, what makes a film a Māori film, the diversification of Māori characterisations, and the international decline, rise, and success of Māori film.
