This course presents a holistic view of understanding children through examination and discussion of the diversity and multiplicity of childhoods both globally and locally. It examines how the lottery of birth creates inequality and privilege. Critical engagement with diverse perspectives of childhood will support students in their understanding of wider socio-cultural and political contexts. In recognizing how ‘local’ contexts of childhood relate to global views of childhood, the course encourages students’ to reconceptualise or confirm their understanding of childhood to see children as active and valued members of society.
