Introduces students to the study of conflict resolution and human rights. Examines the traditional/orthodox conflict resolution models, and looks at the growth of new models and initiatives since the 1970s. The post-1945 expansion of human rights at the international level, and the application of human rights in the domestic sphere is evaluated. New Zealand’s unique history of human rights, dispute resolution and conflict resolution is a focus of the course. Students learn basic skills and capabilities used in applied conflict resolution, with emphasis on the key skills needed for negotiation and mediation.
