'Popular Genres' have traditionally been defined by their exclusion from the authorised literary canon. Examples range from cartoons, comic-books, graphic novels, detective stories, fantasy, science-fiction, to film noir, classic television series and pop lyrics. Recent reappraisal of such genres that has seen them increasingly placed within the domain of English studies. This course investigates both characteristic features of these genres and the process of their legitimisation.
