Ways in which literature of various periods frames fundamental human desires: for power, love, sex, meaning, identity, a voice are examined. The course considers the importance of genre, audience and social context, with attention to the range of modes - oral, textual and visual - in which literature plays out the language of desire. Throughout, the role of the reader in making meaning will be foregrounded, as well as a practical focus on developing your own written style.
