Understanding Deaf Culture through language in a functional and situational manner provides insight into the characteristics of Deaf identity as a socio-linguistic minority group within NZ society. Students acquire competency in both production and comprehension of NZSL to communicate at a simple practical level. Basic grammatical structures and functional language patterns are developed, as well as basic knowledge and skills for effective communication in the initial stages of communication.
