Students develop an appreciation of how public policy shapes society as well as how the policy-making process shapes policy outcomes. The course will discuss the theoretical frameworks that influence our understanding of public policy-making; how ideology, interests and institutions determine the content of policy decisions; and various methods of policy evaluation, to include consideration of how public policy affects diverse societal groups. It will use a variety of case studies from New Zealand in a comparative international context.
