This course engages students in an intellectual examination of the structures, systems, and ideologies that sustain the marginalization of individuals and groups based on ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexuality, diversity and age. It takes a critical look at how individual beliefs and institutional practices maintain the unequal distribution of social, economic, and political power and resources in society. The course encourages thinking about the relationships between diversity, power, and discrimination, how these relationships affect social justice, and what might be done to facilitate healing and greater social justice and inclusion. These relationships will make reference to how they are operationalized in Aotearoa New Zealand and with respect to tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
