Explores aspects of language and communication involved in the negotiation of meaning between people of various speech communities employing a variety of media. Breakdowns in communication are discussed in the light of current theories of communicative competence. Introduces issues of language variation, standard dialect and the way in which these impact on language planning and policy. Emphasises cross and intercultural communication, discussing relevant theories and ways in which such communication can be negotiated.
