Students develop the ability to interact effectively in Japanese in formal contexts. There is a strong emphasis on the complex system of Japanese respectful language, including honorific language (Sonkeigo), humble language (Kenjogo) and polite language (Teineigo). These forms of respectful language are applied in communicative activities which require a higher level of formality and intercultural appropriateness. Students develop research skills and expand their knowledge of New Zealand in order to contribute to formal exchanges in Japanese with confidence.
